WILDLIFE
VIEWING TIPS
Tip
#1 Familiarize yourself with the area you plan to
view wildlife. Bring binoculars and a field guide with certain
specific area marked. Bring a camera with a telephoto lens
so you can zoom in for close photos.
Tip
#2 If viewing from the mooses natural habitats, where
unscented lotions and colors that help you blend in. When
you get to your viewing site, remain quiet and still. Try
to be as patient as possible.
Tip
#3 Moose are most active in the early morning
and early evening hours.
Just before sunset moose will roam in search of saplings
or salt. Moose are vegetarians and often seek out the
young saplings.
Tip
#4 If you do see moose, use a zoom or telephoto lens
to bring the creature upclose. Do not try to walk up to a moose.
The animals are skiddish and may dart into the road or right at
you or your vehicle. An adult moose can easily cause thousands
of dollars in damage to your vehicle - even if your vehicle is
stationary when it meets up with a moose.
Tip
#5 Pay
attention to the signs that urge
you to brake for moose. It is
wise to heed this advise if you spot a moose
while driving. Moose have been known to be "spooked" easily
and dart into the roadway. Moose are not particularly bright and
are not afraid of cars, motorcycles or trucks. Braking for moose
means just that - STOP! Then proceed very slowly until the moose
is out of sight. Many a moose collison has occured after the vehicle
slowed down but failed to stop. Hundreds of moose are killed on
the roads every year.
Tip
#6 If you don't feel comfortable viewing moose on
your own, it's best to opt for a guided tour or safari. This
can often provide the best and most unique results.
There are many states
with an abundance of moose and we urge caution in venturing out
on your own wildlife adventure. A moose
safari can be a safe and effective way of viewing moose in the
wild. There are some outfits that will actually guarantee
that you will see a moose. Many outfits are run by registered
guides that really know the territory. You even have the option
to go on a land safari or a water safari to see moose.
There are so many outfitters
to take advantage of that it may make it difficult to choose.
If you have been on a moose safari, let us know what your experience
was like so that we can share it with the rest of our visitors
